Charlotte AAU & Washington Birthday Bash 2023 Recap

February 22, 2023

18 Teal

18 Teal showed a lot of grit this weekend in, already, our third tournament. Megan said, “I’m very proud of the way they fought to keep winning! These girls play with a lot of excitement and are really fun to watch.” We increased our initial seeding by making it into the semifinals of gold! We finished third out of 16 teams in the tournament. We’re ready to get back at it this weekend at SEQ!

18 White

A lot of great results this weekend for 18 White! We went 3-0 on day one to get us into GOLD! We had some incredible plays and serving runs from each one of our players. Our tough serving helped us take a lot of the teams out of system, which helped us establish our middles. Our very own Olivia Garzelloni came in clutch with digging this weekend which played a huge part in our offense. Next stop, Atlanta!

17 Teal

17 Teal is balling!

Emma said, “I had multiple strangers come up this weekend and say how exciting we were to watch.” We are learning to make adjustments in matches to extend and/or win tough games. Multiple times this weekend, Emma had offensive and defensive adjustments that needed to be made and 17 Teal made them with ease and really made a difference within the games.

There’s always work to be done, but we’re going to be ready for Open competition in Orlando in two weeks if we continue to push in practice!

17 White

Nora Van Horn led 17 White during an exciting weekend of competitive play in Rock Hill with 10 of the teams 35 aces! On Saturday, we swept the day with 3 wins and despite some adversity in the first match, we stuck to the basics and came out with a win. After a tough first set in Gold, we made some defensive adjustments and came out with a very exciting 2-1 match win! We fought hard all weekend and finished the weekend 4-1. Back to practice then onto the next!

17 Black

17 Black started the weekend hot with a 2-1 start on Saturday to push us into Gold! We fell short in our first round of bracket play, losing a two set thriller, 28-30. We continued to battle Sunday through some injuries to end the weekend. Our setter to middle connection was strong all weekend, resulting in a consistent side-out game. We’re ready to get back in the gym and carry this momentum into our next tournament!

16 Teal

16 Teal played day one in a power pool in the 17s division against some really good teams, including our 17 Teal team. We learned how important serve receive is in running our offense, and it will continue to be a focus in practices going forward. The girls stepped up as a team to help play through a couple injuries to their teammates. Some stand out performances over the weekend were Elena’s serves, acing over 30% of her serves, and the attacking of Brooke, Cammy, & Julia, all hitting over 0.333!

16 White

16 White came out swinging this weekend! We worked around a few team injuries and with everyone eager to win, we finished day one, 3-0, going 17-15 in a set three in our final match of the day. Overall on the weekend, we were 4-1 and learned to utilize our strengths when fighting back from some deficits. Jailynn said, “These girls showed resilience and hustle all weekend.” The girls played well, learned some lessons, and we’re ready to get back at it on Wednesday!

16 Black

16 Black had a great first day in the tournament coming out first place in our pool! A notable win on day one was against the team that ended up 3rd place. These girls showed major improvement from City of Oaks, incorporating skills and technique learned during practices. Great hitting and blocking were key in our wins this weekend. Day two was a little tougher but overall a great learning experience that we’re going to utilize going into Sunshine!

14 White

14 White competed in Washington’s Birthday Bash this past weekend and improved as the weekend went on. We played some great teams in pool play and really brought it during our last match on Saturday, yet falling short, 15-17 in that three set match. We played much better day two, fighting through injury, and won our bracket! We’ll be back in Rocky Mount this next weekend competing in the Carolina Classic!
