Big South 2023 Recap

April 8, 2023

18 Teal

18 Teal played with next level engagement at Big South. This was a tournament when everyone was just on. We served tough and play some scrappy defense. We finished tied for 5th of 97 teams!! Big South was probably our best tournament yet.

18 White

18 White went 4-4 this weekend at Big South and finished the last day battling in silver! They faced some tough competition in day two and held their own. This team is continuing to see growth at each tournament. We’re all excited to show Tennessee what we’re made of next!

I’m singing a different tune after this weekend!

17 Teal put the work in as far as blocking and digging since MEQ. We set the goal of getting a day one Open win and the girls earned it this weekend! We played super smooth, with great energy, low error, and a ton more blocks and digs than in Indy!

We avenged a loss against a team we played in Sunshine that was top half so I can absolutely say we’re growing! Now to keep the consistency into NEQ!

17 White

17 White had a weekend full of strong competition. We top halved in USA finishing in Bronze. Team camaraderie was great throughout and we did a great job staying focused and supportive. Nora stood out from the service line averaging an 2.46 service rating while putting 97.3% of her serves in play.

17 Black

17 Black started the weekend a little slow on Friday but came out strong on day two and three. Reagan Brown had a particularly strong effort with 12 kills out of the middle and hitting over .500 on day two. Coach Colten said, “I saw our hitting and shot selection vary a lot this weekend and the girls did great in keeping the opposing defense guessing, which helped our side out game tremendously.” We’re looking forward to getting back in the gym and continuing to improve!

16 Teal

16 Teal competed in Open for the second tournament in a row and we definitely saw huge improvements. In practice the past couple of weeks, we have been working hard on decision making in out of system situations and learning how to disadvantage the other team instead of trying to score in impossible situations. Our pins did great at giving smart balls which allowed us to score more efficiently when we got those easier balls in return. Our offensive efficiency was led by our middle Julia hitting .467 on 30 attempts over 5 matches. Brooke added 60 kills over 5 matches, hitting .318 as an outside. We’re looking forward to NEQ in a couple weeks!

16 White

16 White went 6-2 on the weekend and overall had strong and consistent play across all three days. It is exciting to see the concepts and skills that we have been working on in practice transfer to the tournament. I’m sure the girls would all agree, it was so nice to go into Big South with ten strong, healthy players after being without them for the past few tournaments. We’re coming for ya NEQ!

16 Black

16 Black played their best tournament all season this past weekend! The first day we went 3-0 and hustled for every single ball. Day two had more competition, which led the team to a 1-2 record. Even though we were facing tougher teams, the girls kept working to make sure the errors did not repeat themselves and were quick to make adjustments. On day three we finished second place in silver!

15 Teal

15 Teal had another successful weekend this weekend down in Atlanta. We faced some really tough competition but the girls held their own and really impressed us. Hayden fed our attackers very consistently and led in assists. Morgan hit a whopping .750 against a tough Rocky Hill team and Julia held it down from the service line this weekend with great consistency. Quick turnaround before we head up to Philly this weekend for NEQ, let’s get it!

15 White

15 White had a great weekend. On day two, we were able to hold two teams under 10 points which was very exciting. Our serving was very strong throughout the whole weekend, which makes us so happy that when we work on serving in practice, our girls are dialed in and really using that time to get better. We competed with tough teams and never let off the gas, even when trying some new things. Back in the gym we go!

15 Black

Presenting, your 3x silver bracket champions! 15 Black maintained a very high level of play this weekend although the competition had increased from previous tournaments. We pushed through the last day, finishing the weekend with 30 total aces. We were also able to take the win, by reaching double digit kills in a couple of matches. What a great weekend in Atlanta. We have lots to work on because…we’re going for gold in Richmond!

14 Teal

I just want to start off and say that I am extremely proud of my 14’s after this weekend in Big South! For some of them, this was the first three-day tournament they have attended! Day one of the tournament, we saw some pretty solid competition but every match we played was competitive and we finished the day one, 1-2! Day two went WAY better and we finished 3-0, which is always an amazing feeling! Day three we lost our first match to a team that was just having a better day than us. Overall, I want the girls to remember 14 year old volleyball is a battle of serving tough and passing, which we did pretty consistently all tournament! I also want to point out that 14 year old volleyball is about HAVING FUN! It’s a huge growth year and every tournament we have had huge growth! I can’t wait to see how ACPL Richmond goes! GO CAV!!

14 White

What a weekend! We played some really amazing volleyball this weekend! Shout out our middle Taylor for nailing three aces with two of them being a row! We’re super proud of the progress the girls have made. We would also like to thank Sydney and Lindsey for our amazing art work!
